POV: Full Day as a Pro Session Drummer (Drama)
When I was growing up dreaming of making a living playing the drums, I often wondered what it was like to be in a REAL drum recording session. I recently cut a drum track for my buddy Meshach Jackson. I thought I would film the whole thing POV style and bring you along for the ride!
You can check out Meshach's music here: open.spotify.com/artist/13Ifw30Y9iDhlpGddvHb5M

    Cool video. Thanks for the perspective. Question: It seems like someone is clapping slightly off the beat, at times, in at least one of the four takes, but it's not mentioned, or maybe I missed the graphic. Do you hear the same thing? If so, is that ok maybe due to the added depth, kind of like double tracking a vocal?

    I am new learning and some parts of this song is a little difficult to do but I will nail it. Also, it’s so fucking hard to understand most of the words not because I am not a native English speaking, but because of the new vocabulary. It’s still hard to assimilate the name of the “body drum” even in my language 😅

  • @ndykman_pdx
    @ndykman_pdx 2 дні тому

    Excellent example of why you need a producer. The part is just way too busy. I know you said he is working a lot on the mix to make it sounds less busy and top-heavy. So, why not just do that from the beginning in the actual performance. Artists will get too stuck on their ideas. A producer gets them unstuck.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums 2 дні тому

      Depends on the producer. But, in the end, it's the artists vision of a song that matters. You could say the same about the part for the RHCP...or the Hendrix song I reference. In the end, they become a part of the song. If that's what the artist hears, that's what needs to be played. I can list songs for days that have busy drum parts. Could another part have worked? Sure. But would the song have been the same? No. If you give the same song to 15 different artists, you will get 15 completely different versions. A good producer listens to the artists vision and then looks for the quality in that. My job is to help that artists vision come alive.

    Love you, love your channel, love your playing on this. But, and i don't want to bash the guy at all - why do a lot of musicians who make charming, earthy, basically simple folk songs, feel the need to overcomplicate their music with asymetric forms, parts, bars, to many kicks / stops in strange places? I just turned down a real decent gig by an otherwise great musician knowing what pain it'll be to have 20 red flags in each of the 15+ songs of the set... And it's not (only) because i am lazy. I feel that a lot of music would be better it would be more simple and just flow, as everyone in the band will relax, play more musical and audiences will get it more easily. Love. Peace.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums 2 дні тому

      You should hear the mix. He's doing an incredible job of mixing this drum part in where it sounds natural and not at all top busy.

    lol - the last one was driving me nuts because the chapter marker on the tileline says "Help" and I missed the part on the video itself says "Something", so I was scouring Help for anything close to your pattern. When I finally rewound enough to see the Something caption it all made sense. That is truly a groove that totally shouldn't work for the bridge of that sublime ballad but it does!

    Great video! Technical question, when you flip the pattern (around 44min), do you play a double with your left hand (floor and then the accent on 1 on the snare) or do you play a diddle with the right hand to buy some time (and be able to give the power on the downbeat on the snare)? Either way, you sound great!

      Samples are part of the landscape now. Just how it is. The great engineers use then as a tool and not as a crutch. If done properly, they can add a lot. Or take away a lot. All in how the tool is used

    Ah my favourite time signature!! Your snare ghost note patterns are awesome, and you add alot of movement and emotion to a good song. Really cool seeing how a drummer of your calibre has alot of the same issues that I experience when tracking, especially the pyschological aspect of thinking about parts, analysing stuff you've just played while trying to be the moment with the new part you're actually playing....or stopping a take when no-one else thinks you've done anything 'wrong' but you just don't reckon you've played with the right feel or conviction, and you're trying to negotiate getting a take you're happy with while not annoying the hell out of everyone else
